sakura bloom sling diaries: tradition

Friday, February 8

I love you a bushel and a peck
A bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck
A hug around the neck and a barrel and a heap
A barrel and a heap and I'm talkin' in my sleep
About you

Guys and Dolls gave us our lullaby, A Bushel and a Peck. My mom sang it to me, and her mom sang it to her. It was an unintentional tradition, really. I hadn't even realized that I had passed it on, and that it had already been established in his little mind as our song, until I was away and my mom sang it to him. It soothed him into an instant quiet.
Growing up, we had a nightly ritual as my mom would come to each of our beds to tuck us in. The covers would be up to our chins or tucked underneath our arms and she would sing, I love you a bushel and a peck, a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck ... I remember watching my younger sisters squirm in their beds because they knew what was coming when the song ended. GOOOOOD Night, she said. SLEEEEP Tight. Don't let the bed bugs BITE! But the bed bugs did bite. Every night. With tickles and screaming squeals of laughter. And I can hardly sing that beloved song to Everett without following it up with a tickly BITE from that pesky bed bug. 'Tis tradition.
You can listen to the song HERE. Take it away, Doris!
