lighting the town christmas tree

Tuesday, December 3

If you've never experienced a lighting of the town Christmas tree before, well then welcome to the club. It's completely marvelous. We'd heard that there was going to be a parade last night, but we hadn't realized that it was THE parade of the grand lighting of the Christmas tree until we'd wandered down and saw what looked like the entire population lining the streets. All collectively bundled with hot beverages in hand and kids perched on shoulders, their puffs of breath fogging the air above their scarves. Donkeys, camels and wise men led the parade down Piccadilly street, individually packaged candy canes were in abundance, Christmas spirit was just bursting from the brass section of the high school marching band, and Lorelai Gilmore waved to me from across the street. If there is such a thing as Christmas magic, it filled those streets to the brim last night.

I wish this photo was lots bigger so you could see how cute that wise man on the left was up close. All smiles.

We left the parade a little early so we could walk down and show Everett the mammoth tree before the crowds showed up for the lighting. {UPDATE: A reader linked to the sweet story behind this tree, so I wanted to share too. You can read it here.}

By the time Santa showed up to light the tree with the candy cane of power {and this guy was the real deal, not a fake beard in sight}, Everett was fast asleep under a pile of blankets and we were buried in thick caroling crowds, singing along with a small army of elves. Tyson and I had our arms free to wrap around each other while everyone counted down with Santa and watched the tree burst into light. The town cheered and it was so Christmas-y and romantic, it was pinch-me worthy.
