let them drink juice!

Thursday, October 25

If you follow me on instagram/twitter, you might already know that we've been messing around in the juicing world lately. The whole thing initially started because I had begun to noticed how unbalanced my diet was becoming. With Tyson not around as often, I found myself with much less motivation to prepare balanced meals for myself. Two of us for dinner? It'd be your typical chicken/fish, vegetable deal. But just me? Cold cereal sounds good! It's the sorry truth.

THEN, I discovered the documentary gem, Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead {you can watch it for free on Hulu!} and it blew my mind. Basically it documents the journey of a guy as he drinks ONLY JUICE for 60 days. His physical transformation was inspiring to me. Not necessarily his weight loss {which WAS impressive}, but how he felt when it was over: energized, alert and healthy. We decided to give it a go. To kick-start our juicing we decided to try out one of the BluePrint cleanses, just to clean out the system, rid ourselves of cravings, etc. We chose the Renovation Cleanse, which is the base level. We loved this cleanse! Because there are 6 juices, you end up drinking one about every 2 hours and never feel hungry. I really loved all the flavors, and found them to be refreshing and most of them sweeter than I expected. I especially loved #6 which was cinnamon cashew milk and tastes almost exactly like Horchata. {In fact, I found a ripoff recipe for it here and LOVE having it for breakfast now}

After trying the cleanse, we felt so motivated to just juice all the time! It was convenient and portable and SO much easier to down than a thicker smoothie. Fact: I am the slowest smoothie drinker you will ever meet. So we went and got ourselves a juicer. After reading plen-ty of reviews, we settled on the Breville Ikon Multi-Speed Juicer. Without getting too infomercial on you, I will tell you that I cannot say enough about this thing. Just watch the youtube videos!
The thing about juicing {or cleansing}, is that for the first little while, you don't exactly feel awesome. For about the first 5 days I was exhausted, with headaches and leg cramps. But I knew that was to be expected and felt good knowing that I was getting all the nutrients I had been missing out on. After the 5 day mark, things got a LOT better. I felt more energy, I was never hungry and BONUS! NO COOKING! ;)
We've only been doing this for about two weeks, but we both started losing weight almost immediately. Since that's not what I was personally going for, after I realized that was happening, I started eating whole foods in addition to the juice. Not that I'm condoning this as particularly healthy, but I certainly felt a lot less guilty downing a pizza knowing that I was still getting tons of fruits and veggies during the day. ;) {All that up there?? ONE JUICE!}
I'll update again after we've been juicing for longer, with a few favorite recipes too just in case anyone wants to try. But so far, we are loving it! And it is unbelievable how good they are. Real, freshly-squeezed grape juice? Mauve in color and sweeter than any drink I've ever had. And an hour spent in the morning preparing a day's worth of juice for Tyson? An anti-domestic dream come true! ;)

If you have any questions, feel free to ask them in the comments and I'll do my best to answer them! :)
