a 1942 address

Monday, August 27

I was just sorting through our bookshelves when I came across these pretty old photos of my grammy taken in 1942 when she was just 20 years old. I hadn't ever noticed this before, but on the back she had written the address of where she was living at the time {you can see it behind her in the top right photo}: North Park, 3982 30th Street, San Diego California. So of course I google mapped it. I'm not sure what I was expecting to find. I think I was hoping that someone had taken care of the house for all these years and it was still there.
Turns out, it's just an old sidewalk and a barber shop.
But if this happens to be your local barber shop, you should know that in 1942, it used to be a charming white house with a porch. And a pretty girl with a palm-tree dress lived there.

I used to live in North Park!! 30th street is the main drag of this hipster-type area. It's right near Balboa Park, so I bet that's where they are in the golf pictures. And there are tons of houses still there that are from that era. They're the cutest craftsman homes. What a great find!

We live in Encinitas, which is the north county of San Diego. I was talking to an elderly lady at the DMV the other day around this area, and she told me that a lot of the homes and residential areas were either taken over by the city for government buildings or bought out as businesses. It's really quite sad when you think about the rich history behind it all, and how it was torn away for something as lame as a DMV or strip mall.

Beautiful photos of your grammy. Such priceless treasures.

August 27, 2012 9:53 AM

Up until about a year ago I lived right across the street from that barber shop! It's so fun to see what it looked like years ago. Thanks for sharing!

your grammy is a cutie!! i can see some resemblance. i live very close to North Park so I know where that is. It's actually a cute, hip town now. My family has major history in san diego too, we currently live in a house from 1912 in San Diego. What a cool little discovery you found. :)

August 27, 2012 10:06 AM

She is stunning. I wish everyone still carried themselves with such class and composure!

I live near North Park and it is one of my favorite neighborhoods in all of San Diego. It still has a ton of vintage flavor and craftsman cottages, though 30th street itself is now bustling with low key but hip restaurants, bars and other businesses.

I love this flashback.

August 27, 2012 10:07 AM

So funny! 30th street is one of the most happening streets in San Diego :) that address is RIGHT across the street from one of my favorite restaurants in SD. She must have seen the coolness of 30th way before everyone else here :)

I love finding old photos of family. Oddly enough, we have one of my grandmother when she was 18 or 19, I think, with short hair. The funny part is, when my brother was 8 or 9, he looked so much like the photo (he had shaggy hair).

I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed these photos, and how lucky you are to have found them! When I was looking at them, I was thinking of how this looks like they could easily be taken in today's modern times; how we, even at this age, could be wearing these clothes and be posing in these situations. But then, I see slight details like the car in the first photo, and it's like, wow, these things actually existed. I think that these things are extremely cool because they are remnants of the past, and it's crazy to think that they used to be just the norm.

haha, welcome to the innermost workings of a fourteen-year-old.
