I was just sorting through our bookshelves when I came across these pretty old photos of my grammy taken in 1942 when she was just 20 years old. I hadn't ever noticed this before, but on the back she had written the address of where she was living at the time {you can see it behind her in the top right photo}: North Park, 3982 30th Street, San Diego California. So of course I google mapped it. I'm not sure what I was expecting to find. I think I was hoping that someone had taken care of the house for all these years and it was still there.
Turns out, it's just an old sidewalk and a barber shop.
But if this happens to be your local barber shop, you should know that in 1942, it used to be a charming white house with a porch. And a pretty girl with a palm-tree dress lived there.

I used to live in North Park!! 30th street is the main drag of this hipster-type area. It's right near Balboa Park, so I bet that's where they are in the golf pictures. And there are tons of houses still there that are from that era. They're the cutest craftsman homes. What a great find!
Wow she looks just like you!! that is crazy!!

We live in Encinitas, which is the north county of San Diego. I was talking to an elderly lady at the DMV the other day around this area, and she told me that a lot of the homes and residential areas were either taken over by the city for government buildings or bought out as businesses. It's really quite sad when you think about the rich history behind it all, and how it was torn away for something as lame as a DMV or strip mall.
Beautiful photos of your grammy. Such priceless treasures.
Up until about a year ago I lived right across the street from that barber shop! It's so fun to see what it looked like years ago. Thanks for sharing!

xo the egg out west.
your grammy is a cutie!! i can see some resemblance. i live very close to North Park so I know where that is. It's actually a cute, hip town now. My family has major history in san diego too, we currently live in a house from 1912 in San Diego. What a cool little discovery you found. :)
She is stunning. I wish everyone still carried themselves with such class and composure!
I live near North Park and it is one of my favorite neighborhoods in all of San Diego. It still has a ton of vintage flavor and craftsman cottages, though 30th street itself is now bustling with low key but hip restaurants, bars and other businesses.
I love this flashback.
So funny! 30th street is one of the most happening streets in San Diego :) that address is RIGHT across the street from one of my favorite restaurants in SD. She must have seen the coolness of 30th way before everyone else here :)
Beautiful! You look just like her!

So sweet :) I have my grandmother's old photos too. I used to use them as reference for my paintings. They are always so beautiful. I love the one with the bike. ♥Lindsay

Totally jealous of the vintage photos-those are priceless!
Before I even read that this was your grandma, I knew from the second photo that she had to be related to you! You have her beautiful smile :)
I live right down the street from 30th!! Rest assured North Park is a DARLING neighborhood still. Alive, vibrant and home to many hip San Diegans :) Love these photos.

As many have said, you resemble her greatly!
I love finding old photos of family. Oddly enough, we have one of my grandmother when she was 18 or 19, I think, with short hair. The funny part is, when my brother was 8 or 9, he looked so much like the photo (he had shaggy hair).

I'm from San Diego and I know just where that is! It's a bummer that the house isn't there anymore. But, there are a lot of similar looking houses in that area! So fun!
Those are super cool pics!
Unfortunately, being a lady I don't go to this barber shop :-) but it is right down the street from me! Will think of you when I run by!

I love looking through old photos. Wouldn't it be fun to go back in time?
How did it make you feel when you saw the house was gone?
Eat Cake
You could be her twin! Holy cow. Beautiful pictures! You can see that good style runs in the family!
This post warms my heart. My husband laughs at me, because I tend to date cards, pictures (I always write on the back where we took them and when) , photo albums... One day, I hope my grandkids will want and care to look at the memories I leave behind, so they can find out a little more about their story.
That is down the street from my house!!! Most of the houses around here look exactly like that and were built during that time. Still is quite a charming neighborhood!
Ohhh , what a lovely Post , you have so many resembles with your grandmother ... beautiful ;-)
wow so crazy to see how things change over the years! it would have been a lot more fun to see that cute little white house though ;)

There's a really good bakery/cafe (Heaven Sent Desserts) just up the street from her old address, so I'm sure I've passed it before. I really like seeing old photos of San Diego and comparing to how it looks now.

This is such a sweet post, your grandma looked incredibly beautiful.
Such beautifull pictures!
Those outfits and hairstyles are the best.
You look so much like her!
I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed these photos, and how lucky you are to have found them! When I was looking at them, I was thinking of how this looks like they could easily be taken in today's modern times; how we, even at this age, could be wearing these clothes and be posing in these situations. But then, I see slight details like the car in the first photo, and it's like, wow, these things actually existed. I think that these things are extremely cool because they are remnants of the past, and it's crazy to think that they used to be just the norm.
haha, welcome to the innermost workings of a fourteen-year-old.

Oh wow how cute! These photos are beautiful as well.
Wow you look so much like her that I thought the top right one was of you doing an era photo shoot or something! Obviously it would have been a success. This is your mom's mom, right?
There is a huge resemblance between you and your grandmother. And how stylish she was.

How great to have an unexpected connection to the past! Maybe someday you'll wander into that barbershop and get the best haircut ever!
My heart leapt a little when I read this. I read your blog, but have never left a comment before. I live about 1.5 miles from that address, so it was fun to see it in your post. Also, I love old family photos. While it is sad that your grammy's house isn't there anymore, you can rest assured that it is a lovely neighborhood with a lot of character. :)
I love looking at pictures of my parents and grandparents, too.
My Mother's grandparents were a particularly stunning couple!
