hey, next time I try to save a little dough and dye my own hair, I want you to smack me in the face

Thursday, June 14

Or drop me to the floor with a slowmo tackle in the Walgreens aisle. Either one.
And P.S. thanks for all the color fade tips on instagram yesterday! Project fade commencing shortly.

haha. I dye my own hair too. It's only turned blue once. only once. and this last time a little orange, but nothing a little toner couldn't fix.

It's dark for sure but doesn't look awful at all. I bet it fades quick and then you'll be happy

Don't go crazy putting weird stuff on your hair! I promise you, it will fade significantly by the fourth or fifth wash. Drugstore dye kits just aren't that good for the color to last. Take it from someone whose made every mistake in the book when it comes to home hair color. Good Luck!

P.S.
You look good though...

Oh, girl I did the same thing post baby! Phew!! Hopefully I've learned my lesson but I grow impatient and finding time and extra money for a trip the salon can be rough!!

Alyssa said...

I think it's pretty dark! But you'd be pretty bald :)

Sarah said...

Dying your own hair can be a problem, but thank goodness for the Vitamin C treatment to strip the color out!

amber kanady said...

i love the color! but for what it's worth, i think you could wear a trash bag and still look beautiful! :)

Miss Chelsey said...

Still looks cute! :) Good luck getting it to fade! Sauve is definitely one of the best things to help with that. It strips your hair, and so it'll make the color fade quickly.

{gabbi.z} said...

Ummm, I would just like to state that I think you look gorgeous! But like another commenter said, you'd be beautiful no matter what!

And don't worry about fading it quickly....it'll happen on it's own in about a week. It's notoriously happens with box dye.

Good luck! :)

Call me CRAZY but I think it looks great on your skin. Really warms it up a bit. But I know what you mean...kind of a shocker when that's not what you planned!

Good luck with the fade. I'm sure a few washes and you'll be back to normal!

Christine said...

haha, I've dyed my hair too. Once tried to go from blond to brunette only with the help of my friendly grocery store hair color isle. It turned more copper. Lovely. So, based on this, I think you did pretty well all on your own :)

Also, try mixing some baking soda into your shampoo. According to my hair dresser it helps to open the cuticle, so it may help to release some of the color. Good luck!

i *only* dye my hair with box dyes. after i spent a whopping $90 for an all-over color at a salon, i decided there had to be a better way. i think it turned out great! is it just too dark for you?

Don't worry kid, I'm sure the colour will settle down in time.

I use tints of nature...organic and free of many harsh chemicals found in regular at-home dyes. It smells like flowers and doesn't stain skin or surfaces like regular dye would.
I found a dye brush like hairstylists use at my local drugstore and find it works fantastic when I divide my hair in four sections.
Pulled this off their website: www.tintsofnature.com/au
• NO Parabens
• NO ammonia (ammonia swells the hair shaft and lifts the cuticle causing damage)
• NO resorcinol (pigment)
• NO nonoxynol (harsh detergent)
• NO napthol
Hope your next experience with at home dying goes much smoother!!

I have to say you look gorgeous with the darker color.
Hope you'll find a way to get it to look the way you like it or learn to love it.

I don't know about you, but I am super picky with my hair - I'd even call it obsessed. And if it isn't the way I like it, I get pretty mad and I hate it even though everyone says it is pretty. So I would hate myself for messing around. And that's why I am too scared to dye my own hair. I bought this package of chocolate brown dye weeks ago and it is sitting on my vanity ever since but I am too scared to use it. Guess I am going to return it and go let my stylist do the dirty work. No saving bucks over her. Thanks for learning »my« lesson for me.

I love it, you look gorgeous! But I know exactly how you feel, I've done the same thing! It'll fade fast though as you shampoo it!

Pretty sure you can pull off any hair color!! :) I did the same thing a few years ago, my chocolate brown came out black!! Eekk! Definitely did not look as good on me as it does you!

I tried to dye my own hair once. worst. decision. ever. We'll just file that one away under "that one time my hair turned orange." Your hair looks great though!!

i'm loving the dark! who says lighter hair in the summer is the way to go anyways? be a trend-setter! (not like you aren't already :P)

mine is usually long and brown, but i thought i'd go bold with SUPER short and SUPER blonde.

(i get odd comments from the 95% male population of my engineering office, but hey, i'd regret it if i never did it!)

cheers!

I love the color. Looks so great on you!

I have to say we all pass that stage. For me, it was trying to dye my hair blond (from dark). I think my hair suffered "1st degree burn" :) I have to say you still look gorgeous!

haha. once i was bored in russia with a friend and we decided to dye our hair with hair dye worth $1. i was blonde and so i got a nice medium brown. my hair turned out as blue as the sky. the russians thought the look was great on me. i begged to differ and went the next day to get a 'salon quality' medium brown. it turned out pitch black. i decided the black was better than blue and stuck with it. :)

You look great no matter what! If you really want it to fade my sister-in-law, who is a hairstylist, suggests Pert Plus. That shampoo will strip hair color by causing it to fade. I'm sure any non-color shampoo will do the same. Good Luck

This happens to me constantly. But it will fade with very few washes. Just wash the heck out of it the first few washes, then go back to being cautious and gentle :)

Yep, DIY hair dye is not for everyone. I bought a dark blonde shade once, and it turned out BLACK, as the blackest night EVER. After the fifth wash or so it started fading into something reddish, 'til it went completely away. And it turns out I didn't save a dough, 'cause I bought like the most expensive hair dye in the drugstore.

i think it looks beautiful! BUT if you don't like the darker hair try ColorOpps it's at home color remover. I've used it before ( I naturally have red hair and I dye it dark brown/black... one day I wanted to see if I was going to go back to nautral and after years of black color in my hair, it washed out to my natural red. it's only 13.00, you can find it at walgreens, rite aid, eckerds and some CVS's. it really works :) but I think the dark looks amazing on you! Have a great weekend!!!

XOXO

You should use John Frieda's foam color! Love it!!!! Good results and it doesn't stain. Normally my whole ears are covered in dye :( so it is a challenge. You can also put some Vaseline on you face to prevent it from staining....

Even with Walgreens hair, you look fabulous AS USUAL. Hey, question for ya: I have been eying that top from lulus but have steered clear of it do to the "scoop neck" and "sheer" description on the website...but it doesn't look too scooped or see-through...thoughts?

It's like the hair dye aisle has a magnetic pull on us. The DIY spirit in all of us knows that we should be able to handle a little hair color. The commercials make it look so easy right? Wrong. There are some things better left to the professionals.

ahhh! never never NEVER dye your own hair with grocery store color! always get it done by a pro! the metallics and everything in those dyes are SO TERRIBLE for your hair. so so bad. it will be lots harder for anyone who has used home dye to go back blonde...and to go back blonde without frying their hair off? very unlikely. i am obsessed with the color you had before you home dyed it...but the dark dark is stunning on you as well!
