Yesterday, we got to be those people. Everyone's favorites: the ones with the screaming baby on the airplane. There were no tears. Strictly, I am DONE with you people and security check interrupting my nap time and everybody on this plane is gonna know about it, screaming. The people next to us avoided eye contact, the woman in front of us turned to give us pity glances and I welcomed myself to the other side. It's in those moments when you've tried the binky, the feeding, the swaddle, the diaper change, the bum pat, the rocking, the "I don't know, you give it a try" parent switch off at least 5 times and nothing is working, that you ignore the glances, you hold your wiggly, tired baby and you laugh. Half to keep from crying and half ... eh, mostly to keep from crying. So we laughed quietly and rocked some more and eventually the poor little guy slept and it was all OK.

that skirt is the bee's knees! absolutely perfect. loving that top, as well. :))

I think that's one of my biggest fears and why I've delayed on taking my two little ones on even a one hour flight. So scared!!!
Aw! Oh the joys of parenting! Ev's been on more airplane rides than most his age, what a trooper!
haha awh, poor baby. I'm pretty sure they were staring because they are loyal followers to your blog and couldn't believe it was really you. :)
Parenting, the land where no moment is ever dull. Babies sure know how to liven up our lives, no?
Im glad you had your husband there! Traveling is rough!
http://gandacummings.blogspot.com
been there! my 14 month old cried for an ENTIRE hour and a half airplane ride.
IT GETS BETTER. just remember that. this stage will pass. it happens to everyone! :)
don't worry, you know we all secretly love screaming babies on airplanes. ;)
i am usually the one being annoyed by the crying airplanes babies, which most likely means that when i have babies, they will cry/wail/screech from take-off to landing. #karma
Love your shoes!

I think I would have rolled my eyes more than once if I would have been on that plane. Alternating with pity glances, I guess. Can't wait till I'm one of "those people"! If only "the others" would have known how brilliantly witty you are (judging from your addictive blog). I adore (almost) all your outfits - especially this one.
OMG… so been there. I flew with a 1 year old by myself from SC to TX, and it was hell. Feelin' you, momma!
Oh no!! You poor thing. I'm dreading our 5 hour flight to NYC in a few weeks for that exact reason. It's our first go around with the baby. Wish us luck! You look gorgeous as always. Xo
oh goodness gracious, I know it must have been a longgg day for y'all or at least a long plane ride. Loving those sunglasses though (and that adorable necklace!).
love that striped pencil skirt!
love love the look!!!

Oh, I have SO been there, girl! Laughter really is the best medicine and it helps to have your partner in crime with you - I traveled once with both my kids (4 and 6 mos at the time) by myself from NC to OR and will never do it again...oh, the horrors! :)

Love the tshirt, so simple! You look beautiful as always!

O no I'm so sorry! I probably would have started crying myself, at least Tyson was there to help you! Loving that top!
Oh Syd, that has got to be THE worst feeling.. especially when there is NOTHING you can do to get your babe calmed down and everyone is silently cursing you. I am not a mother yet but that is something I always think about when I'm flying and hear a poor little babe waaaahhh-ing. I always sympathize with the parents and think "that's gonna be me someday so I might as well put on a happy face for them". Hope your next travel by airplane is problem free
good pics! i like the sunny sun im 'em. i can't wait to style a similar skirt like this :)
xxo em
love your outfit!!!!
That is SO hard. But my favorite "Keep Calm" mantra is "Freak Out & Eat Cake" so I don't know how I would have handled that situation. :)
Oh no! That is the WORST! I've been there. My daughter was colic for the first like year of her life and so finicky. I am so sorry that happened. And just remember that some people won't understand and be finicky too but a lot of people will understand and be supportive.
I love these glowy pics!
And don't worry about the people on the plane... They have all either been there or will be there...
OR you inspired teenagers to not have sex until they are married... so really, you did a lot of good ;)
been there! except i sweat and make nervous jokes in those situations haha it's like trying to disarm a bomb! you did good mama! :)
My family calls me the baby whisperer - there isn't a crying baby who doesn't calm down in my arms - even colicky ones!
I always want to ask to hold the crying babies on flights, but I think that would make me a creeper ...

oh nooo!! i want to say poor everett, but i should say poor you and tys! well, now you can check this off of the list of dreaded anticipations - you survived!

i don't have any children but I have been on a lot of planes and I know exactly what you are talking about ... nothing worse then not knowing why they won't stop ... on another note, you look really nice in this outfit!

Oh dear. I just hyperventilated a little. Flying with a baby scares me. Is it ethically wrong to give them baby Benadryl so they sleep on the plane?

Poor mama! At least he's cute enough to make up for all the crying. :) You made a memory, for sure!
Such a fun mix of clothing! I love it! Good thing I bought a leopard belt this week, I pondered if it was too wintry... Guess I'm good. ;) xoxo A-

hehehe i feel your pain. We are ALWAYS those people. Even worse when it's both are kids being ratty hehe, on a 15 hour flight. ha shoot me now!!
I love that you're keeping a good attitude about it :) I tend to get really stressed. Being able to laugh makes those situations way way easier to handle!!
Hugs! xoxo
lol....awwwww! poor thing!
and your hair is absolutely perfect!

Ugh! Flying with a little one is tough! I mean, its hard just having to deal with it, but when you have the deal with other people's reactions as well, that just plain sucks! Made me want to crawl under a rock.
We took our little one to Hawaii when he was 2 months old and were on the plane ALL day. I seriously don't know what we were thinking.
Oh Sydney I'm right there with you! My little guy always gets lots and lots of milk on flights to keep him quiet--and then he spits up all over me and I get my first time-of-the-month while wearing white jeans. It's a crime that they don't have a "Moms Class" section of the plane.
And I'm totally crushing on those heels!
love the sunburst shot! you are so pretty... ALWAYS!
and that experience sounds like our trip to hawaii last year with my sister's 6 month old. i feel for you!
this episode is your unfortunate experience. enjoy. http://www.hulu.com/watch/329163/up-all-night-travel-day
One word...iPad!! This keeps my nephew pretty much occupied during long flights with all the baby/toddler apps.
I wouldn't worry about being the one with the screaming baby...basically unless you are rich and own a private jet - your chance of being on a plane with small kids or babies is pretty high :)
I haven't mustered up the courage to travel with all my kids just yet. But I am sure when I do, I will become one of those people too. That's why I try my best not to judge.
Your outfit is super cute!
Vang :)
glad you just laughed. When we were in our first similar experience I couldn't stop laughing but my husband did NOT think it was funny. He laughs now, but it was just a little too much to take at the time :)
Oh boy, I cant't relate to your side, but I think I can imagine something. Glad to hear he eventually did fall asleep again. Hope you don't have to go through that scene too much!
Loving this outfit by the way :) x
great look!!
with love from Spain!

This story sounds all to familiar to some that I could tell about our experiences flying!!!!! Its ok though, have to still travel on and enjoy life as everyone else, no matter how weird they stare! You look Beautiful in this picture as always!!!! The outfit is ME, ha ha!
i'm loving the gold watch! (or is it yellow?) either way... looks so cute!
i was just in the fossil store in herald square, manhattan and saw a collection of bright GOLD watches at the front... i told my other half that i really wanted one, but thought they were too corny (but you are rocking the one you have on! gives me some confidence to go and buy that one i liked!!)
i am now one of "those people" too! my husband and i tried to take our 3 month old to the movies with us (he is usally pretty good b/c he sleeps a lot!) but it was going to be a disaster-turns out our theater has a cry room! we got to watch the movie in our own little sound proof room-pretty cool!
i love this skirt and the way you have combined it! really nice outfit! very inspirational :) xx

Aw, poor Everett! I think he's more well-travelled than me at this point though, so I have to give him props for taking it all (mostly) in stride.
Just think, one day not too far from now, you'll be the mom traveling with a toddler and he'll be asking you about EVERYTHING in the airport and on the plane :P
Beautiful outfit and it looks like a lovely day in your part of the world! :)

Left brain, right brain, pug brain.
My mama flew back and forth from seattle to zurich several times when I was a baby. What craziness flying with infants is!
I am never one to rudely stare at parents doing their jobs in trying to calm their children down, even in crowded places. It's a difficult thing, I'm sure. But I'm sure your and yo husband looked dashing doing it (referring to your outfits).
Oh, and this outfit is superb! I really love how you can just put on pieces and BAM! Instant hotness :) lol
xx Kat
Laughing so you don't cry in situations like those is my M.O.. Works (*almost*) every time :)
Adore the casual and feminine feel of this look!
Your hair looks incredible!
Love that skirt, you look gorge! It's a baby, people should understand ;)

oh i know that all too well. this past thursday i had a 3 hour flight with my 18 month old and she screamed and kicked the seat in front of us and the old man in that seat gave me the nastiest looks ever! it was awful, i wanted to cry, and had major anxiety! and i get to do it all over again on sunday. no good! just the thought of it makes me sick. ahh. haha. but your outfit is super dang cute!!!
xoxox
i've DEfinitely been there. it seems like a rite of passage or something. my girl usually flies great, but last summer she had a flight from tx to phl where she wailed the entire time. luckily, there was a sympathetic couple across the aisle, and EVERYone on the plane laughed anxiously and told me she would probably fall asleep just as we landed. And she totally did.
Love the pocket on that shirt, btw.
this outfit is amazing!! I'm obsessed with that striped skirt and how you styled it!
~Jacy
http://laviedelenore.blogspot.com
Oh no! That's what I'm afraid of. The husband and I are taking our 4-month old twins on their first plane trip in a couple weeks. What are the chances that both will sleep through the whole flight w/o a peep? Very unlikely... Sigh. I'll be repeating that mantra to keep calm.
ohh!!! that happen sometimes but when they smile all these things are gonne :)
http://ferneva.blogspot.com
I think we have ALL been there!! All you can do is laugh! :) I'm sure even with a screaming baby that you looked great! :)
I love this skirt and good luck with future screaming baby flights. People will get over it :)
http://work-it-blog.blogspot.com/
I feel so bad for the little kiddos that freak out on planes (and the parents because they can't do anything to control their babies). Yeah it's loud and somewhat obnoxious, but you just have to try to ignore it cause you can't do anything about it! I never judge the parents. It's not their fault!
That skirt is great and I love your shoes!! You have great style, lady! :)

Keep calm and swaddle, binky, sway...on? Either way, you lived through it, right?
I'm so sorry. At least you didn't freak out, and you just let it happen. You're a good mama.

Adore it all! Great shoes. Also, I try to never get annoyed at the family with the screaming baby because I know, someday it will be mine.

This is why I'm a bit scared to be a parent, I think I'd freak out during something like that.
I can understand when a baby cries in an airplane, he is just tired. But there was a puppy in the airplane from my trip back from the Caribbean, a puppy who would not stop barking. It was so annoying!

obsessed with that shirt! and i have definitely been one of "those people" before! except by myself on a 6 hour flight. eek! so terrible!!

Love this spring look ! It looks comfy and elegant at the same time ! Xx nadine www.ballerinasbun.blogspot.com
You look great!!
Poor baby ... He was tired of being disturbed. I think we will all be "those people" one day ;)
Once I was flying by myself and my 3 months old, and before we even took off, the couple next to me tried to get a seat assignment change...in anticipation of the screaming I suppose. The could not switch and my little one slept the entire time with no fuss. Near the end of our flight they chit chatted with me long enough for me to discover he was a pediatrican.....one that apparently hated babies I guess.
It gets better. we recently flew with our three year old and one year old and they laughed and cheered as the plane landed.
I am absolutely loving that small statement necklace! so cute!
As long as you can and are able to laugh at a situation like that you will come out alright always! :)
I actually just bought that same shirt last week! Perfect for those days when you just want to wear a tee shirt and jeans without giving up style altogether. And it looks great with brightly colored jeans!

Style to Stage
Ha! Welcome to the other side. Not the dark side, though, just the here's-your-new-perspective-on-life-now-you-have-a-child side. We used to fly all the time when my kids were little, and sometimes I had to go sans husband. Once we flew overseas with a baby that we didn't realize had an ear infection until after take off. That was not fun for anyone. My first time flying with a baby was when my oldest was 3 months old. My husband wasn't with me. All the baby wanted to do was nurse, and nurse, and nurse. And guess who was sitting next to me on the longest leg of the journey? A very sweet Mormon missionary just leaving the MTC. I was trying super hard to be modest, but I knew he was dying! I finally just told him that I would understand if he wanted to switch places with someone, and he did. You're going to have some great stories to tell, too!
As I don't have kids yet, I can't say that I totally get it. Once I was with my sister at Wal*Mart and she handed my niece over... oh boy, did she FLIP. She was grabbing for her mom, bawling, SCREAMING! Every one was starring at me. I just wanted to yell "She's not mine! She's okay everyone!"
Can't wait until it's my own children. haha.
-april.
I know this probably seems like a silly question, but how do you tie your belt like that??
So sorry you were those people. I'm glad you made it back alright. I know how a crying baby while traveling can be... The third youngest would scream the whole road trip (I am one of six... she was by far the worst). Needless to say, we stopped traveling for a couple years until she got older.
Oh shoot...
We're going on a 10 hour plane ride with our baby tomorrow... Oh, how I am dreading it.
girl, sorry the plane ride was tough on the little one- thanks for posting about it though... think we can all learn a lesson from it as fellow passengers and give the parents of the screamin' baby a break! i've been guilty of doing the eye roll in their direction when a baby starts crying- i take it back! for shame!
Don't worry about it. People shouldn't judge. Babies will be babies. :)
You look stunning, by the way.
http://shannonhearts.blogspot.com/
oh gosh. not looking forward to the day when we become THOSE people. i'm sure you guys were a natural though.
p.s. you look gorgeous!!
xo TJ
I'm terrified, just terrified to take Wyatt on a plane. Because I know we'd be "those" people too. Don't feel bad- I'm sure it was terrible, but it's over now. And I'm sure it happens to every momma at least once!

Sorry you're one of those people. That's how my brother refers to me now with the one year old-- whenever we fly. "those people". I dunno if you knew this but i didn't-- they start to pressurize the cabin as soon as the door locks on the plane. That's when babies ears start to hurt.... we didn't know and had screaming. Sadness.......since then we start giving the child something to eat/drink as soon as the doors lock on the plane and we've done pretty well. Good luck. YOu look lovely.
Sorry about that Sydney. The truth is I get annoyed by children screaming, while parents TOTALLY ignore them. But its a baby and you did your best..
Glad everything's ok at the end!

From one mom to another, sometimes its nice to hear that others have gone through some rough rides too :) Glad to hear you guys got home safe & sound!
I'm so happy I finally have a leopard belt like yours, my mom & dad gave it to me for my birthday today in the morning :)
The inauguration into that club is never fun. But as a mom it's just facts of life. Thanks for being you and writing about it! I am loving the longer skirt length on you, you look sensational!

I have flown a lot with my babies over the years. What seemed to help, most of the time, was having them suck on something during take-off. You know, how we chew gum during takeoff to ease the pressure on our ears, it's the same for babies. They can't tell you their ears hurt and sometime that pressure can be painful, especially if they have a mild ear infection you may not know about! Breastfeeding or a bottle is best because it's continuous sucking, not like a binky where it can be sporadic. So sorry the flight was stressful, I've been there too!
i just haaave to have this tshirt!! and since we dont have a zara around here i messaged my friend to get it for me :-)maybe the zara shop here in germany have those shirts still :-)
keep on going sydney, i love your blog and pictures. you are a very smart girl and your family is soooo cute :-)

Oh, Syd, my heart goes out to you!
Being one of "those people" has been a parenting fear of mine ever since I first had the displeasure of sitting next to such folk on a 9-hour flight.
Just breathe!
That necklace is sold out on Madewell-I can't help but think you are partly why!! You are too stylish! You inspire me to wear cuter clothes every day!!
That little pig necklace is adorable! as is the whole outfit :)

Oh no! But it sounds like you handled it like a champ!
we're taking a 5 hour flight to Mexico this summer and I am terrified! My daughter will be almost 1.5 years old then so I'm hoping she will handle okay but my goodness, I have never been more nervous about going on vacation!
You are more and more beautiful everytime I stop by!!!!
Are your shoes comfortable? And are they really 5 inches tall? I've been considering getting them but I'm also 5'9.
ADORE THIS FAB LOOK! WORK IT!
