pictures of a rainy afternoon

Tuesday, April 24

You know, I really thought I would miss the infant stage. I mean how could you not? When they're so tiny and new it feels like there is nothing in the world that could top that little body right there. But I've been surprised to find that I don't as much. As Everett gets older, he's not just fun to take care of but legitimately fun to spend time with too. That might sound strange, but to me it feels like there's a difference. Like all of a sudden he's old enough to be considered "company". And pretty cool company at that. Going to the gym or the grocery store or into the city definitely takes more effort, but he gets such a kick out of seeing new places and discovering what a strawberry feels like in his hands that it makes it much less overwhelming than I thought it would be {or what others have said it should be}.
I may be running on less sleep with more to do now than I ever have before. {A shocking discovery for someone who was so excited to graduate college so she could get her brain back. Joke's on me.} But gosh, it feels pretty darn happy. That Everett, man.

Sydney, baby E is getting so big!

April 24, 2012 9:46 AM

Thats why I've said sometimes, that I want to keep having babies one after the other, just so I can have the fun of them growing up AND the fun of having that newborn-ness around too. :D

April 24, 2012 9:47 AM

that is some good lookin' company if you ask me. i think you need some more rainy afternoons.

April 24, 2012 9:49 AM

April 24, 2012 9:53 AM

April 24, 2012 9:53 AM

i love this post. it is so true. those little people in our lives just become the greatest company and bestest of friends. i guess that's the magic of children and we're lucky they share their special-ness so freely with us.

April 24, 2012 9:54 AM

He's a little cutie and I love reading your thoughts on motherhood. I actually prefer these real life posts and photos much more than your fashion posts.

It is a great stage, but you will keep saying that with each new stage they get to because it is SO fun to see them get to that next step. My favorite with my two kids is 6 months - 18 months. My son is now 2, but that stage is when they still love on you ALL the time. That is my favorite!

April 24, 2012 9:58 AM

I always wonder how I will survive with little sleep, but every mama says you get used to it. Maybe I should soak up all the sleep I am getting right now!
Looks like a cozy weekend!

Love that one of him looking at the book.

I enjoyed my son being a newborn, but I enjoy him more now that he is older (sometimes... some moments are not so great) because you're right, he is like company. I can do things with him...he can do more... its just fun to watch!

He's pretty good at handling the situation while I talk about babies and getting married though... Thank you Sydney and a big hug to little Everett!

April 24, 2012 12:57 PM

I so know what you mean. Natalie is four months old and I talk to her nonstop while we're home, and I love taking her to do errands with me because it gives me someone to talk to while I'm out wandering around Target/the grocery store/wherever. I think it always surprises people when they hear me talking to "myself" but it's a really tough habit to break out of :) Not that I would want to because I like talking to her and I'm pretty sure she likes being talked to. So, yeah. Excellent company.

You description of watching baby E grow up reminds me of how I feel about my lil Eskie pup. He was so cute when he was a rolly polly puppy, but now that he is older and fully vaccinated I can take him everywhere and on walks. It is so much more fun!

April 27, 2012 10:30 PM

Isn't motherhood grand? My two are grown and middle-aged now, but I have lots of fond memories of them when they were tiny. There is also the joy of grand-motherhood, but my advice is to spend as much time as you can enjoying your son...because he will be grown much too soon.

I'm really enjoying the pictures of Everett that you share with us all. Thank you!

May 02, 2012 8:37 PM

I continue to feel this way as my daughter gets older! Each phase has it's challenges and joys. At 2 1/2 she is discovering new things and I love watching and learning with her. I love to see what she latches onto and remembers the next day or the next week, which always is a surprise to me lol. Glad you're enjoying your motherhood as much as I am!!! -Tana http://www.tanastable.com/

I know this is an old post but I was just catching up on your blog and had to comment on this one. Take it from me (and the many other mamas who have told you this) it only gets better and better! My daughter is 14 months old now and she is one of my favorite people to hang out with. Sure, she's a lot of work but she's also really fun and always super happy and excited about life. What more could you want in a companion? She's my best bud and Everett will definitely be yours too the older he gets :)
