Shoes: TopShop, most comfortable jersey knit skirt ever: TopShop, Top: Gap, Necklace: ASOS, Sunglasses: Target
After a little meeting yesterday, I attempted to grab some {non drive-thru} lunch with Everett in tow. I was well stocked with toys and books, putting full confidence in their ability to give me 10 minutes to eat with at least one hand.
He didn't touch one of them. Taking their place, and contending for the top spot in maximum baby entertainment was my necklace, my salad bowl, my salad, my tray {which is much easier to play with if you pull it off the table and onto the bench to be with you} and a bag of wipes. His new found interest in everything is one of the things I'm loving most right now, so I didn't mind his curious hands. I did however realize that for the most part, toys are pretty overrated. As he gets older, I might just have to buy myself a new set of pots and pans, a few wooden spoons, a set of Tupperware that's not from your Tupperware party, and call it good.

Plays-with-anything might be the best possible problem to have!
I love that skirt! It looks super comfy. I have a similar one in black, so I'll definitely be using this as inspiration when I wear it next!

I can't wait until I have a cute little one to raise. Sounds like you are a great mom.
You had to be there
Even with toys, have you noticed that they never get used for their intended purpose? A lego becomes a cup, the doll becomes a rocket.... A tray and wipes? You have a very creative little man!
Love the look! Very cool! Yep, household items are the best toys!

Toys are TOTALLY overrated! The best toy and one that has kept my toddler entertained for months now? A box of tampons! She pulls them out one by one, puts them back in one by one, pulls them out....well, you get the idea.

So beautiful...

Ha so true! I'm already trying to figure out how to encourage people not to buy us toys...any suggestions? :)

haha. i used to push a flyswatter around the house. forget the barbies and dolls ... i've got a flyswatter.
Aww. What a curious little man! Looking amazing as always. Have a happy weekend.

I really love that skirt! I wonder if it would be comfortable as a maternity skirt?

Wipes are a great toy! They seem to make a wonderful noise, at least in the babies ears. When we are out my son can entertain himself for hours (ok minutes) with the things in his diaper bag. His favourite? My re-usable water bottle. Your skirt looks amazing!!
i love the skirt! and everett is the cutest :)
I love how understated you are! So pretty!
Yeah, I'm sure he will be more interested in cardboard
boxes than toys soon.

love this outfit!! cute!!!
Love this outfit so much! And it seems like Everett has a great imagination :). Too cute.
I am going to be getting myself one of those skirts.
Love the look and Everett has the best taste in things, who needs toys when you can have a tray.
Oh yeah, my 3 year old son plays with EVERYTHING but his toys. I even gave him real pots and pans - for kiddies - from IKEA, because he loves to cook, and all he said to me was that these were too small to make a proper dinner and weren't kept in the cupboard with my real pots and pans...toys are really overrated.
fashionfauxpas-mintjulep.blogspot.com
Haha YES! I don't buy my son toys anymore because he doesn't play with the ones he already owns! Pots and Pans are the best my friend!
Love this outfit! I'm hooked on the monochromatic scheme!

You look great! I love the outfit!
You look gorgeous!
You are spot-on about getting the wooden spoons, Tupperware, etc! My 2 year old daughter's latest obsession is taking the largest Tupperware bowls that she can find with the lids on, 2 wooden spoons and just banging away on the "drums". Out of all of the toys that she has scattered throughout the house, her favorites come from the kitchen cupboards! :)
I agree, I don't have children but I'm always intrigued by the way children become engaged with non-toys. I know that my parents always gave us (my brother and I) the opportunity to create our toys out of found objects and for that reason I think my creativity really blossomed to design!
Check out my blog today, I have an awesome purse-makeover DIY!

Haha when I was really little my favorite "toy" was a cardboard box.
first of all, for someone who recently had a baby, you look absolutely amazing! and secondly, i can just imagine cute little Everett's chubby hands pulling all of those things :-)
I don't have any kids yet, but I've been a Nanny to several families... and I totally remember this stage of grabanythingbutwhatimsupposedto. Its fun, though, to see them discover things for the first time!
P.S. LOVE the maxi skirt. Definitely on my "need to get this" list for summer shopping.

Love the sophisticated look. Although she's a puppy and not a real baby, my dog is the same. I went and bought her all these toys but she just wants to play with tissues and shoes and everything else non toy-related :) Love your posts!
Megan @ Storybook Love Affair
Ha! Oh Syd, I love reading your posts about Everett/life with a baby in tow. Your words always get a laugh or two out of me early in the morning, and for that I thank you :) you make that skirt look as though it was made specially for you. Rock it, girl!
-Janell
So true. Most of my 11 month old daughter's toy sit untouched most of the time. Except for Sophie, she gosh darn LOVES that dumb giraffe. I actually keep an extra necklace, an extra set of keys, a cheap pair of sunglasses, an old cellphone and a couple other odds and ends in my diaper bag.
According to my mother I used to play in the cupboards amongst the pots and pans and the Tupperware. Apparently, there is just something so amusing about those items to little ones.... :)

Love the oversize gold watch. Such a cool touch!

SO TRUE!! You caught on faster than I did Sydney, but YES, your baby is curious, and because he loves you and is interested in you, he is far more interested in the things you are "playing" with and what makes them so fun lol. My son is 14 months old, and that's where we are, the toys...the 5 ride-ons he has, the two talking puppies, all sit mostly, while he comes to grab mommy's laptop...even though he has his own, courtesy of Leapfrog. But it gets to be a lot of fun as he gets older and gets active, a $3 ball, and your abundant energy will keep him entertained and full of laughter that will make you cry. But yes, either way, the most interesting play for him will always involve YOU in some way. LOVE LOVE LOVe the outfit today, hope that skirt is still in stock, and that necklace is a nice touch!
you look so pretty <3
It's so true! My son's favorite toys are a small pot, spatula, wire basket, and a medicine bottle with marbles inside. I've found toys to be a total waste of money! =)
Love the simple outfit! Your baby is adorable!
you have a way with making the most simple outfit look amazing, love your style!!

i literally just got that SAME skirt in the mail yesterday. it totally is the comfiest skirt ever. :)
You're one of my top 5 greatest style icons! So down to earth but uber chic and stylish without needing to get crazy.
Add to your shopping list: boxes of all sizes, wet washclothes, novels, and anything a pet might play with and you'll have endless enetertainment until he hits two-ish. Wish I would have known that for the baby showers--I would have just saved all the bags, wrapping paper, and boxes and returned all the gifts. :)
What a happy photoshoot! Love the background and how everything works together with the outfit you're featuring. Looks awesome :)
Toys are totally overrated. If you are interested, check out my blog post I did last year on why we don't give our baby toys...

your hair got so long!
I cannot even handle that you had baby E a few months ago....you're teeny little waist proves otherwise. Lucky lady you are!! Did/do you work out at all to get back to your pre-pregnancy size?
Sydney - you're HILARIOUS. it is one of my main reasons i can't get enough of your blog. Praise the Lord for some good comic relief that is right up my alley. It also doesn't hurt that you're hot & your style is killer (duhhhhhhh). Keep it comin' sistah momma. You got the goods.

You look fantastic! Love the comfy outfit and your hair!
I feel like my cat does the same thing. She has all these things to play with yet she comes and messes with what ever I'm doing. For instance she wants to walk all over my keyboard right now.
looking beautiful, momma!
i think buying yourself a new set of pots and pans and letting everett play with the old ones sounds like a good plan :)
YEah, toys are definitely overrated. My 9-month-old loves newspapers, magazines and any jewelry or food I dare try to eat. Someone told me the other day I'm thinner now than post baby. uh, yeah. I have no time to eat and we take the stroller out to calm baby girl down ALL THE TIME. Looking lovely Syd. XO

What an elegant outfit! But how to you manage to keep the bottom of long skirts clean? I always imagine they drag on the ground a bit...
At our nursery in my ward, most of our toys are wooden spoons, tupperware, the "warm fuzzy" balls that they can put into old 12 oz juice bottes. They love it!! Toys are totally overrated!
I definitely think toys are overrated at that age.
My son just turend 17 months and is just now starting to enjoy his toys. It's fun to watch him play and see which ones are his favorite. Stuffed animals, cars, and balls are what he likes best.
My little one is the same way, she will choose an object not intended to be a toy over a real one any day. And if mom is wearing a necklace you better believe its coming off haha.
Love the outfit!
haha i know what you mean! my four month old is into everything-he especially likes the wipe package too! love the skirt!

As a mommy to three girls, I also recommend a stash of crayons and a notepad. They have always worked for me, even now when they are 8,6, and 3. I really enjoy reading your blog.
haha so cute!

yogurt containers have kept my child entertained for a long period of time. I agree toys are overated!
Love your outfit!! I want to buy the skirt from TopShop, but am unsure about the size. I usually wear anywhere from a 2-4 in US sizes, what size did you order? We have similar body builds. Thank you girl!!!:)
www.browneyedcharmer.blogspot.com
Your outfit is gorgeously modern-chic- *very* Eastcoast. :)
Also, my rule of thumb is: if my grandmother didn't have it growing up in Arkansas (with an outhouse and one stop sign on Main St), my babies sure don't need it for "proper development". Stick it to the man and go with toilet paper rolls and a stick. ;)
Right now my little goober only wants to play with his burp cloths lol... a little gross but it keeps him happy lol
www.flowercityfashionista.blogspot.com
hahaha thanks for the tip!
I don't have any kiddos yet but I always tell my mom I'm just going to buy a cardboard box. The kid can go to town on that thing.
I love this outfit. So chic. And I really want that skirt!

That skirt is perfection on you, so chic!
you are so right! they get easily bored with the "usual" toys really. anything at this point interest them! you look great by the way! :-)
Pretty much. Cardboard boxes and pots and pans were how I spent most of my childhood....when I wasn't making hampster mazes out of our movie collection :) Ah, fun times, fun times.
Always love reading through your personal commentary, and I'd just like to say that your bod looks great after just having your son, the whole look is fab on you.
AHH I just can't get over that long skirt!
So true. Ya know, practical life skills are just as important as imaginary play so letting him help in the kitchen, as messy as it may be at times, is super helpful in the long run! I recommend the book How to Raise an Amazing Child which is based on the Montessori method. Even if they don't wind up in a Montessori school, in the early years at home, Montessori teachings can be very beneficial to children.
BTW, I love your necklace too! xx
Love that outfit! And you are SO right. My kids are into everything but their toys!!!
This outfit is incredible and I'm obsessed with your skirt!! I am actually really jealous of it in fact :)

I agree, toys are overrated because its mostly for us adults who want to buy them for our kids, nephews and godchildren. From experience, children are fascinated and entertained by the simplest things in life and rarely if ever need overly priced toys to have fun.
ps. love the maxi skirt, very simple yet stylish.
I guess all you can do is go with it, enjoy it and laugh!
Love the look - I have a grey jersey maxi too and have genuinely found it to be super versatile too - in fact I wore it on Fri as a mini on www.thankfifi.com
This outfit is lovely. I wish that we had better weather here in the UK so that I could rock some of the style you show on your blog Sydney :)
That skirt is so lovely, and I love your watch too! I agree with the comment above...if only England's weather was better...we could rock outfits like this all the time haha!

that is so true! we tend to over spend and over spoil our kids with toys! when in lots of cases they are content with minimal things and their imagination!!!!! one thing im proud of is encouraging my kids active minds!!!
my mum always ells me that y favourite toy was clothes pegs :)
Always beautiful!!Fantastic!

You look great! How tall are you?
SO TRUE. You wise mom. Socks, shoes, wrappers, cups, spoons, phones, and flashlights are among the favorites in our home. ;)
How do you tuck in your shirt without all the clumping showing on the Maxi skirt?

Just bought a complete copy cat outfit at Target TODAY! I was thrilled when I saw the knit skirt and then everything else just magically fell in place down to a very similar necklace. Adore your style, Sydney!
Très Jolie! j'aime beaucoup le style, les couleurs sobre . Bref très bon look!
I totally agree with you. No matter how much I prepare and bring things my son will like, he will inevitably find something other than a toy or book to play with. Sometimes the best toys are the cheapest. My son loves to play with paper and plastic cups. It can entertain him for hours. Love your blog.I can totally relate to it. My son is now 3 and although some things are easier others are not.
Agi:)
