I consider my hair routine to be pretty straightforward so this is probably going to be old news to most of you, but I've gotten a few requests lately so here it is! Hopefully it's at least a little helpful for those who asked.
First start with clean, dry hair.
Then you'll need your product of course. These are the two I use almost daily {when I don't, it means my hair is on top of my head, takin' a day off from little hands} but I'm loyal to only one of them. To me, hairspray is hairspray is hairspray. Dry shampoo on the other hand {in my experience} can go really wrong or really right. I've tried several name brands out there, but I just keep coming back to Suave. It smells amazing, leaves your hair with crazy volume and texture and makes your hairstyle last for days. Also, I use the keratin version because my hair has a tendency to be frizztastic in its natural state, but the regular version is really great too.
Spray your roots with the dry shampoo.
Then rub your hands through to absorb.
Pull the top half of your hair back so that you can have easier access to the lower portion of your hair. Gather a strand and loosely wrap it around the curling iron {I use a 3/4 inch barrel}, leaving the end of the strand out of the iron.
Release the curling iron and pull on the strand to prevent too tight of a ringlet
and it'll look something like this
Continue the curling on the remaining lower portion of your hair and then finger comb it all together.
It should leave you with a soft wave
Take the remainder of your hair down and continue the curling process
When you get to the face framing pieces just put a slight bend in them, as opposed to a full curl.
Again, finger comb through the curls and lightly spray the ends with your favorite hairspray
And you're done! All together, it takes me about 10 minutes and with the use of dry shampoo, I can get it to last about three days.
Here's to happy hair!

Gorgeous hair. Thank for tips. I can't wait to try this soon. Thank again :-)
LOVE the tutorial! I really need to get into the habit of styling my hair. I am constantly in a pony-bun :)

Dry shampoo is the best. I've never tried the Suave brand though, thanks for the tip!

I love me some dry shampoo! The Tresemmé kind is my fave, but I haven't tried Suave yet. May have to give it a go!
THANKS SO MUCH FOR THIS TUTORIAL. YOUR HAIR LOOKS PERFECT, must give it a try :)
XO
i have about the same length as you but my hair is super fine. curl doesn't last long. maybe dry shampoo is the answer!
You do have really fantastic hair!
I've been looking for a dry shampoo for for-ev-er! Gonna try the suave! thanks for the tips!
Your hair is fantastic. I am in the process of growing my hair out after having an a-line for two years just so I an do styles like these. I hope mine turns out as great as yours!
such easy process and gorgeous hair result. thanks! :-)

Great hair tutorial! You have such lovely hair.
Megan @ Storybook Love Affair
This is how I do it too! Except I don't use dry Shampoo b/c my hair is sooooo thick. I hate doing it but if I do it does last like yours for a couple days.
Now I want to know about your skin! It always looks so flawless. I feel like I never have that fresh face. I want to find a good pour reducer. Maybe it is just that I need a tan!
You had to be there
Great tutorial lovely and what beautiful locks you have!

This is great! This is my typical morning routine, minyus the dry shampoo. I've heard so many good things about it though I think I'll give it a try.... Normally I just wash my hair at night, run some volumizing serum through and sleep on it, then my hair has a nice lift to it and then I just curl and spray in the mornings.
Thanks for the tutorial! I feel like my hair is soooo dull and boring! No style. Maybe this is what it needs! And it doesn't hurt that it takes only 10 minutes!
You make it look so easy! I'll have to try it.

I need to grow my hair out again so I can curl it! My hair looks funny short and curly. Plus it's fairly thin and I have yet to figure out how to get the curls to look full and lush instead of piecey and, well, thin! Will have to try the dry shampoo before curling method!

Your hair always looks so lovely! Thank you for this very detailed tutorial!
Aww I miss your good ole video tutorials, you were always SO cute explaining things! haha, this is awesome though, thanks :)
looks beautiful, but this is defo too much for me to do on a daily basis. I'm a wash and shove it in a top not kind of gal.
For special occasions though, this would be great!

this is great and just what i've been looking for!! any advice on a curling iron brand?? thanks!

I guess it HAS been done time and time again but you make it look so darn good!

Perfect timing for this tutorial! I have the same curling iron and wanted to figure out how to do less 'ringletty' curls with it. Thanks! :)
(yes that is a word!)
I've been curling my hair for far too long, yet my waves never seem as loose & beach-y as yours!
Thanks for the tutorial!
I need something simple like this! thanks for sharing :)
Wow that's easier than I thought it would be! I think I'll have to let my hair grow out a bit before trying this out.

Lookin fabulous {as usual}! Did you do the technic when you're hair was shorter??
lovely tutorial! I do a similar look but I use the straightening iron... always have. I compare the method to when you curl gift wrapping ribbon with scissors
Thank you so much for this!! I've been trying to figure out my hair for months. I always end up with crunchy ends. I'll def have to try the dry shampoo. I keep hearing a lot about it.

Love this! Thanks Sydney :)
So when you say "with the use of dry shampoo, I can get it to last about three days." do you mean just that initial spraying that you did? Or that you use dry shampoo on the other days as well and you just don't recurl? I've tried washing my hair at night and flat ironing and then using dry shampoo in the a.m. and I always feel greasy by late afternoon. Maybe it's the dry shampoo I'm using.
I have a question about this....I am a brunette and have issues with the dry shampoo making my roots look gray (since I'm not buying the tinted stuff)....do you just rub it through with your fingers or brush some of it out to eliminate this problem?
I have to try that dry shampoo! I want my hair to last three days!
Thanks for the tutorial. I am really happy you use a dry shampoo that works good and i can afford. Time to try something new with my hair.
you have seriously beautiful hair.
Thanks so much! Hopefully my hair will get long enough by summer so I can start working this!
And lovely work on The Washingtonian! I look forward to reading it each week!

I had trouble getting my loose waves to last, and then a hair dresser recommended I put mousse in my hair when it's wet, before blow drying. It made ALL the difference! I use Herbal Essences Tousle Me Softly. Everyone's hair is different, so I think it's best to experiment and figure out what works for you.
Great tutorial! Your hair always looks lovely.
Awesome tutorial! It is a simple yet beautiful look. And you rock it! Still working on growing my hair and until then I'll just look at your gorgeous pictures and dream.
xo Laura
that looks really pretty and im stoked you did a tutorial- i WANT to see more. ya know, please!!
Now if only my hair would hurry up and grow out!
Yay, thank you for this!! I appreciate you taking the time to give us a little how-to! Your hair is gorgeous by the way- the new color really looks awesome on you!
When you say you can get it to last for a few days-- do you sleep on the waves, or pull it up at night? Then do you revamp the curls a bit the next day?
Thank you for the DIY.
Muchas gracias
Regards from Spain
Can you just come over and do my hair? I'm just too lazy. Bring the cute babe too. (in a non-creepy way, of course.)
Awesome, that was SUPER helpful!
You completely made me regret cutting my hair off! :)
You have gorgeous hair! Thanks for this!

Ok, definitely giving this a try! I've yet to master the perfect curl. Your hair always look amazing. Thanks for sharing! Xo

Now, do you have a way to make my hair grow faster so I could try this right now?!?! :)
I really need to buy a curling tool and try and get the hang of it. I love your hair, it always looks so pretty.

Wow, 3 days is awesome! I've always wanted to try dry shampoo but thought it would look obvious with dark hair. Plus my hair gets oily in 2 seconds flat. I'm going to try this out asap.
Thanks!!

Lovely pics and love the easy tutorial! I do something very similar but thanks to these pics I realized... I gotta leave the end out of the curl. My version is a little too beauty pageant-ey, and I'd rather have the slightly edgier waves like yours. Thanks! =)
You make it look so easy!!! I know practice makes perfect, so I'll get there... :)
GOSH! What I would give for this hair!!!!! Mine is super short...but I LOVE this tutorial. It's something I can DREAM of to have hair this long! I LOVE LOVE LOVE Suave dry shampoo as well. it's the best!!!!
Pretty!
i love doing my hair like this! mine lasts a couple of days too.
http://babybakerlove.blogspot.com/
this tutorial opened my eyes! I never realized that you weren't naturally a wavy haired gal. I just assumed that in order to get hair like yours, you had to be born with it. I've been plagued/blessed with thick, stick-straight hair that only gets wavy when i braid it when its damp. I'm going to try your method and hopefully its not a bust for me. Thanks for posting!
Love dry shampoo! 3 days that is amazing!!
http://gandacummings.blogspot.com
Thanks a bunch! I know you've done this once before forever ago, but i'm glad you posted the tutorial again. Especially the part of the "bend" rather than full curl! lovely.
I love this. I am completely hopeless when it comes to styling my hair. And I don't use products in it, but this seems do-able. Thanks!

Pretty gurl, pretty hair. oh! Dry shampoo saves me...truth: I only wash my hair once, maybe twice a week. Seriously.
somethingus.blogspot.com
Love it! I also use the suave dry shampoo but sometimes the scent can be overpowering. For anyone that has trouble with their curls holding, I recommend trying the Conair curling wand! Or maybe any wand? I made the switch and my naturally pin straight hair holds the curls much better now.

Come along to Japan
THANK YOU! :) love it! i guess with more practice i could get it down to 10 minutes... try 30 minutes haha!
Love this look and can't wait to try it. Just wondering what the purpose of the dry shampoo is. Does it make it last longer??\

I've never used dry shampoo, but with the way people talk about it, I think I might have to give it a try!
Thank you for giving a suggestion and reasoning for a specific brand! I would definitely use the keratin one since my hair also likes to get a little frizzy when clean.

Oh, the dry shampoo tip on clean hair is a good idea! I just bought the basic Suave dry shampoo and you're not kidding about a good texture and the smell is better than the others!

Great Tutorial! I just love your hair!!!
this is perfect! i'm going out to buy some suave dry shampoo. it's nice to know of one that really does the trick :)
I just bought the Suave Dry Shampoo because I don't have time to shower everyday now that I'm a mother of 2. LOVE IT! thanks for the tip pretty lady :)
Normally my hair gets all crazy while I sleep, so I can never make curled hair last. Leaving the ends of my hair out of the curling iron & prepping with mousse (thanks to another reader's comment) made a world of difference in getting this style to last 3 days! I curled it on Friday, worked with it in a low pony Saturday & all day Sunday (I'm a bartender)- it still looked like I had just done it! I'm so looking forward to less split ends by utilizing this- Thank you so much!
you have no idea how much hair envy i have when looking at your pics. so jealous. thanks for the tutorial.
Thank you so much! I bought a hair curler a while ago after your last hair tutorial, and have been practicing my technique! After this I have finally mastered the long wavy curls in a shirt time so I can do them every day!! So excited! My limp thin hair finally has life!!
Just want to say I love your blog and you are one of two I just have to check daily. However, it frustrates me that you never reply to your reader comments. I understand that you get A LOT and are busy with all you have on your plate, but time and time again I have read one of your posts and then seen multiple readers ask the same question in the comments and they never get an answer. Can't you just answer any repeated questions daily in one comment reply? There have been times where people are dying to know where you got a poncho or what lipstick you are wearing or, in this post, i would love to know how the heck do you get your hair to curl like that without crimping the ends if you leave them out? you assume that your readers are master curlers like yourself and if we were, we wouldn't be reading your tutorial! I need details girl! Specifics.
Please consider doing a mass reply to questions people post on your blogs because your readers are supporting you and you can do them a favor and not drive us crazy with poncho/lipstick/shoe-lust.
Thanks:)
Thanks for the tip on the Suave dry shampoo -- it is MUCH better than pssst!
I still, cannot get my hair to do this. No problem, I'll just be envious of yours!
