Shoes: Aldo, Skirt: F21, Belt: JCrew, Sweater: Target, Glasses: UO, Watch: Gift, Bracelet: c/o Vanessa Mooney
Before yesterday, I was convinced that the most horrible experience of my life was the night that I drove 17 hours straight through the mountains of Wyoming, overdosed on 5-Hour Energy and un-overdosed myself into a grocery bag on the side of the highway at 4am. Then yesterday happened. That dreaded shots appointment, where my baby - chubby, pink and cooing - lay naked on the padded exam bed, fiercely grabbing my hand while nurses, on the count of three, simultaneously stabbed two needles right into my heart. And he screamed until his lips turned blue.
Before he was born, if you had told me that I would cry at this appointment I would have said, "You crazy girl. I don't cry at anything. Ever. These tear ducts are dry old Scrooges. I laugh in the face of tiny baby legs and big needles." Just kidding. I would have believed you. And it turns out I'm just as wimpy as I always thought I was. As soon as the nurses were safely out of the room, Everett and I cry-babied it up together for a few minutes. And then we went home and praised the creator of infant Tylenol.

Just wait. Wait till he's running and falls down on the sidewalk. Or trips at school. Or gets his feelings hurt. Your mom heart will always hurt with him. It's good though. It's beautiful. The way the Lord intended. Because, we, as moms, can make every bit of these things better. And that is a WONDERFUL feeling!

Great outfit! As always!

hannahstiff February 07, 2012 8:32 AM

I got my daughter's second round of shot yesterday and she hasn't cried at all at either appointment but she wailed all afternoon and woke up about 9 time yesterday... it's a sad process for sure. You, however, look lovely.

You will probably tear up a little at each and every one of those appointments! I still have to hold it in when my 6 year old gets shots!

Don't worry, I would have cried too. poor baby :(

Diana February 07, 2012 8:37 AM

my pediatrician always told me to give my baby tylenol about 15-30 mins before the shots.. it makes them less painful. He said, "it is the kinder thing to do." I think it semi-worked because my daughter always took the shots pretty ok.. either that or she's got a high pain tolerance. I feel your pain mama... i think secretly those shots hurt us 'moms' more. : (

PS: you look great!

I know exactly what you mean when you said, "two needles right into my heart." Perfect way to put it. I hate those appointments too. Give that little guy an extra hug for me

The Cunninghams February 07, 2012 8:49 AM

Shots suck.

Sara February 07, 2012 8:49 AM

Those first shots are the worst. I'm a pediatric nurse and give shots everyday. One thing that I have found works is holding your baby chest to chest, tucking in their hands (very important), so they never see the nurse and they're immediately in the cuddle position. Their legs are looser in froggy-style because they can't kick so it goes faster. Get all the paperwork done and get packed up beforehand so you can just hold him afterwards. Good luck with the four month shots!

modern Suburbanites February 07, 2012 8:50 AM

Sorry about the shots. AS a nurse, I would HOPE I could be tough at that appointment...but it's unlikely.

cecimadden.com February 07, 2012 9:00 AM

Oh I feel your pain! I somehow managed to miss the first several shot appointments. I finally took my daughter for her 12month shots and I really did almost cry right there in the room. It was super awkward because the nurse probably thought I would've been over it by then. Oy ve.

Emmett Katherine February 07, 2012 9:02 AM

Awww poor everett. I think every mom cries at their babies shot appointments. Not that I know first hand, just going off friends and family experiences!

after reading this post, i asked my mom, "was it the most horrible experience when we got shot as babies?" and her reply was something like, "yes, it's awful, the little baby doesn't even expect it and then they get stabbed and you want to die and then your whole day is ruined and you go home thinking the world is so cruel and i don't want to talk about it anymore".

Elle February 07, 2012 9:27 AM

astr!d February 07, 2012 9:31 AM

love that skirt!

and baby shots are horrible. the worst part is that they are usually happy slobbery things moments before the stick. then they look at you like, what is going on!!! it hurts my heart to remember! it will be ok!!!!!

Shana February 07, 2012 9:51 AM

Sydney - I have been meaning to tell you (for quite some time) how much I'm enjoying your Momified posts. :) I have two little guys (4 and 1) and so many of your stories transport me back to those amazing/scary days as a new mom. So thank you for that.

And yes - I SOBBED when my little guy got his shots. Every time. And uh....still want to? I have gotten a little tougher...but not much. Last Thursday we were in for both little guys...4 shots for the oldest, 3 for the youngest and both of them wailing away, one on each knee. I'd be lying if I didn't admit that a few tears escaped. :)

ps. What the heck regarding comments on your Washingtonian post??? So easy to be a hater, I guess. Will leave a comment of support when I get a sec.

dxeechick February 07, 2012 9:54 AM

Pretty soon the baby will start recognizing the nurse and break out into tears before she even touches him with that blasted needle! :(

very cute story :)

Shannon Bezold February 07, 2012 10:01 AM

As I'm sure you can probably tell from the comments, you are not alone in crying at shot appointments!! I started crying as soon as the nurse walked in the room with the needles! My husband looked at me like I was a freak but when she actually gave the shots and Hunter started crying, hubby scooped him up so fast I barely had time to process the whole thing!! It gets better but it will always break your heart when he cries from pain.
P.s. I am totally in love with your blog! Im a stay at home momma and get stuck in the sweatpants and tshirt ruts but your blog has definitely helped pull me out of them :)

www.Alwayssaygrace.com

Susanna N. February 07, 2012 10:15 AM

Totally understand this! I was the same way. When my daughter was only 7 days old and have to have her heel pricked, I walked out of there cursing that nurse!! One thing that really helped with shots is immediately nursing after they get the shot. It obviously calms them down and works for you too! My daughter's doctor's office was always really good about letting us sit there and nurse when they left for as long as we needed.

Stephanie February 07, 2012 10:18 AM

Girl, please. I think that is completely normal. If it makes you feel better, I cried when they trimmed my dog's nail too short and she whined when it started bleeding.

Yea, I'm that crazy dog-mom.

I've got no hope when it comes to my flesh and blood babies crying.

Oh that skirt is so lovely and feminine. I must have one of these for summer time! And i'm with you on the shots girl--I was in BYU-Idaho's nursing program and had to give little newborns their hep B shots in the hospital and I was totally fine with it. But when those nurses come at my little guy with those things I can't help but get choked up. It's for the best tho!--at least that's what I tell myself :)

My little guy didn't cry his first shot appointment...nope he left the big crying scene up to me! Now he is 19 months and just walking into the doctors office he crumbles to the ground and out come the biggest saddest alligator tears!! I like to give him Tylenol before and take a hot shower after.....now that he is little older a litter ice cream (for both of us) works magic!!

Bon Bon February 07, 2012 1:25 PM

Definitely just experienced the baby-shot action this past week, for the 1st time. We're spacing them out, so little man only got one shot. He did great...until about 5 hours later. Then it hit him hard. So so so sad. Hooray hooray for baby pain relief! xoxo

Kendall February 07, 2012 1:26 PM

Okay, first let me tell you that you are not alone. I cried my eyes out- and if you know me, you'll know that I have what they call an "ugly cry" where it.. well.. it isn't pretty. My son had Jaundice when he was first born and it lasted 2 months after he was born, so we had to take him into the hospital to get his little heels pricked every week. They would poke his little heel and then squeeze blood out- I cried every time and it was terrible. The best thing you can do is just be there for your little E, which it sounds like you already are. You're a wonderful momma just keep being awesome!

When my son got his first shots I had no idea I would react like that either! It felt like someone ripped out my heart! I felt so silly for having to hold back tears. Good to know I'm not the only one!

ThisLittleMomma February 07, 2012 3:43 PM

I want your hair! And that skirt!! I dislike well baby check ups, I cry too...like for an hour, even after he had forgotten he got shots.

I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this, but if you give him Motrin or Tylenol about an hour before the appointment, it helps little one with the pain. The medicine is already in his system and he will sleep better afterwards.

MJ @ Teaching in Heels February 07, 2012 4:35 PM

Oh sweetie - my heart would be breaking for him too!!

You know you're a mother when reading your story about Everett's shots and remembering it first hand brings tears to your eyes all over again. Us momma's are very protective, someone hurts our babies and try hurt us too :(

Shots never get easier. baby O had his 2 month shots last week and we both cried. He's my 3rd little bittle and it still broke my heart. He was so sad and sickly for the next two days.
I hate shot days. :(

Bloss February 08, 2012 2:37 AM

Hey Syd, I'm a dr, you did a wonderful thing getting his shots (IMO) and you both deserve a medal for bravery .. ouch!

Seriously - you just had a baby - get out. You look amazing. honestly... ps. I love your vday looks. thanks! :)

Dani February 08, 2012 3:08 PM

I adore the Valentine's Day looks you put together. Really like the idea of mixing reds/oranges/pinks and then wearing a nude pump! Trying to recycle some items from my own closet for my Valentine's ensemble. (Because usually I just use EVERY holiday as an excuse for a new one...)

Thanks for the tips!
