it looked different in my head

Shoes: Target, Dress: Thrifted, Denim: AE, Blazer: Thrifted, Belt: JCrew
OK. It's time for this sista to get a full length mirror. Because this is horrible.

Also, when you ask your husband if an outfit works, and he says um. gooooooooood .... with kind of a vocal question mark at the end ... it doesn't look good.

January 24, 2012 5:09 AM

i recently told my guy, "if you love me you'll tell me when this is just too much. [motioning to my ensemble] BEFORE we leave the house."

but i think you're pulling this off, girl!

January 24, 2012 5:11 AM

Yeah, that'll happen...you still look darling, but if it's not what you envisioned sometimes it's hard to get the outfit mojo back!

January 24, 2012 5:14 AM

the only thing that don't fit here is shoes. :}

January 24, 2012 5:16 AM

I think your outfit looks amazing (as always!). I think you're amazing too Sydney! I only discovered your blog about a week ago but already I'm in love with it and you seem like such a nice, wholesome and genuine person. I love reading about you and your beautiful family :)

January 24, 2012 5:17 AM

hmmm...i'm with you. i totally have those days too. maybe it's the shoes that are throwing me off?

you still look super cute though, and if you didn't say you thought it didn't work, i'm sure everyone would think you rocked it regardless because you can pretty much pull of anything! including this outfit!

i like the boots with the tights!

PS LOVE your ombre hair. what's your secret!?

January 24, 2012 5:50 AM

In that third picture you look unnervingly like Elliot from scrubs... Love the boots, darling!

January 24, 2012 5:50 AM

I just don't like those boots with the rest, but the combo dress-denim shirt-yellow blazer is TOP!!

January 24, 2012 5:52 AM

The dress and the blazer totally work. Just ditch the denim shirt. I'm on the fence about the boots paired with this outfit.

January 24, 2012 5:55 AM

i actually like this look! yellow blazer looks amazing with denim ;)
great shoes too!

January 24, 2012 5:58 AM

LOL I hate when that happens. I do like the yellow paired with the black and white dress.

January 24, 2012 5:59 AM

Haha! There are lots of outfits in my head that go wrong on camera...YOU my dear could never look horrible-your adorable smile always shines through and makes you look great no matter what!

January 24, 2012 6:00 AM

I always do this and I have a full length mirror, so go you! Sometimes I plan outfits while I'm trying to fall asleep, probably not the best time haha.

January 24, 2012 6:08 AM

um, wow. i don't agree at all. i think it looks splendid. just splendid!

January 24, 2012 6:14 AM

Haha Sydney, I have to say that you totally pull off the yellow. The only think that I don't think work are the shoes ... maybe something a little sleeker to balance out the layers, print and color on top. Its funny though because I was just thinking about how much I love yellow paired with black.

January 24, 2012 6:17 AM

I like the colors on this one. The yellow really pops against the black and white dress and the blue denim brings out the blue in your eyes.

Congrats on your Washingtonian column :)

January 24, 2012 6:18 AM

Girl you would look great in a bin bag. I would't worry too much.love the yellow. xxx

January 24, 2012 6:24 AM

This post is so funny! My husband always thinks I am going overboard (and maybe I do get too dressed up for living in a beach town :) Oh well! He calls me an "Olsen Twin" when he really thinks I have taken it too far LOL. Sometimes I agree with him, but other times I just tell him to shut up because he doesn't read fashion blogs or have any idea what the trends are in women's clothing.

January 24, 2012 6:25 AM

I agree that it's not your best, but it's still very cute and I love the yellow on you!

January 24, 2012 6:43 AM

January 24, 2012 6:56 AM

Don't be so hard on yourself! I think this is really cute. Also, don't say anything about yourself that you wouldn't say about your best friend!

Unless you would tell your best friend that her outfit is "horrible." Then, I suppose, carry on!

BUT, you look lovely. Don't let that critical voice in your head tell you otherwise.

January 24, 2012 7:26 AM

love the yellow blazer and the blog! even when i am not commenting i am always here!! nice nice!!!
my husband does the same, in fact he has lately asked me what do i normally think when i am getting dressed. he clearly doesnt always get my choices. it doesnt really matter... is just annoying soemtimes.

I totally love the concept and the colors on you! You can wear so many different things, Sydney, and look fab, as always! I think it's the proportions that aren't working for me....I want that blazer to be a bit shorter and the shoulder pads a bit less "shouldery"--but again, LOVE the concept and can't wait to see that blazer again, with jeans and sky-high shoes!

January 24, 2012 7:27 AM

haha you're still cute. you'd look good in a burlap sack so don't worry.....
my husband always says: "uhmmm... you might regret that later... i mean, you always look good. i just don't think you'll look back at pictures and be glad you wore that."

uhm...thanks? at least, they're somewhat honest!

January 24, 2012 7:29 AM

hahaha, it happens with my bf as well!...in this outfit i would change the boots, although with them it's not so bad, the yellow jacket rocks!

January 24, 2012 7:36 AM

I looked in the mirror at the end of a romantic evening with the hubster...and I had mascara literally all down my face...and he hadn't told me...? What? How can that be?

He said he thought I was trying a new look. Again...how can that be? ;-)

January 24, 2012 7:52 AM

You can pull off anything.
Maybe if you would've tied the denim shirt around your waist like from the 80's you might feel better about it? I don't know just a suggestion. But I think... you can rock any wardrobe!

BTW... love how nude lipstick (or none) looks on you. :)

January 24, 2012 8:38 AM

We all have our days, but this is a great color combo! Maybe you would have felt better about it if the denim shirt was under your dress (not sure if that would have been possible)...either way, you are still adorable!

January 24, 2012 8:44 AM

Well said, I haven't had a full length mirror in my home for over 5 years. My husband will do the same thing! I love the bright yellow blazer.

www.mylovelylist.blogspot.com

January 24, 2012 8:47 AM

I have a full-length mirror, but when my beau is still sleeping I try to be considerate and only put a small light on...that leads to some pretty awful fashion mishaps!

I love the chambray/yellow look though, those two go quite nicely.

January 24, 2012 8:50 AM

You still manage to pull it off! I've been standing on my toilet twisting my body in unfortunate positions in order to try and see my whole outfit, haha!

I'm so glad that even YOU have outfit mistakes every now and then!

i'm wearing one of those types of outfits today... yuck.

but i actually like yours!

January 24, 2012 9:53 AM

I actually love this head to toe and think you look adorable. The fence backdrop is a nice touch.

January 24, 2012 10:10 AM

lady, i have these days ALL THE TIME. late at night i think of an outfit and then i see the photos christopher took and i'm like "what is that and why does it have no relation to the idea in my head?"
for what it's worth, the yellow blazer is cheering up my morning from all the way over there :)

January 24, 2012 10:11 AM

I love this outfit! :)

January 24, 2012 10:16 AM

That yellow blazer is darling!

Sam

January 24, 2012 10:19 AM

I actually LOVE the dress and tights, and I like the pop of yellow. The shoes don't bother me. The denim under the yellow looks off in this styling and I think the blazer is to long for the dress, unless you belted it with a big thick black belt. That is just me...

You always look like YOU though. And that is what matters!

January 24, 2012 10:25 AM

I love that you took a risk though. Sometimes you'll do that and the outfit will be magic! So, it's worth it.

January 24, 2012 10:34 AM

100% disagreement here ... in fact, the outfit I'm wearing today is wonderfully, synchronistically similar, but I put yellow shoelaces in my boots. And everything about my outfit except my tights was thrifted! LOVE this outfit!

January 24, 2012 10:35 AM

I kinda like it! The docs and bright yellow with the dress make it kinda youthful and playful! I think its kinda cute!

Hayley
The Weekend File

January 24, 2012 10:38 AM

I love the dress, denim shirt, belt as is. The idea of blazer/tights is awesome... but I would switch the colors and do a black blazer with crazy, fun tights... and booties! But, you literally have THE best style! I love your blog!

January 24, 2012 10:45 AM

Love the Yellow Blazer with the denim shirt underneath :)

January 24, 2012 10:46 AM

Um I'm crushing those Target shoes. Hope they're recent.

January 24, 2012 10:47 AM

the fact that 99.8% of your outfits look incredible and you don't have a full-length mirror, kind of blows my mind. just sayin'. ; )

Ali
January 24, 2012 10:47 AM

Love that you posted an outfit and were totally honest about your mixed feelings.

I think this would be even better without the chambray and with basic black booties. More polished, still chic.

Love your blog!

January 24, 2012 1:37 PM

so, its not horrible. i love the boots and the denim shirt. it would have been better with a muted paid shirt and then the bright blazer ??? oh well, you still look great.

well, it's sort of encouraging that this happens to you too. it always happens to me. i still think you look pretty great.

But I have found that when my fiance answers my "How do you look" question with another question, he isn't telling me the truth. He's trying to be sweet and supportive which is the most important thing! But a full length mirror would be helpful in the fashion sense!

Your a pretty gorgeous girl, so you can get away with lots! I think the yellow jacket may be the mishap in this collection - although the colour does wonders for you!

This happens to me all the time! Kudos for posting an outfit you don't completely love. That being said, I think everything you have on here is AWESOME.

I agree with some other comments: the whole outfit rocks... aside from the shoes.

January 26, 2012 11:59 AM

love the yellow pop! you look gorgeous always Sydney!

For what it's worth, there is definitely something there. The print of the dress is fab, but the shape is wrong, and it should be shorter for this look. Shoes should be lower on the ankle without the contrasting color of the wedge. Love the color/patter/texture combo, though! And love that you post things that don't work! Just as important!

the top part is very cute. I think the boots (which are cute, but not with this!) just...shorten you maybe? boots with dresses are tricky! but I like the colors!

ha ha! oh my goodness, i've done this a few times myself. and i HAVE a full length mirror! this is how we learn, right? :)
