That time at Sephora

What that title really should say is "That time I passed out at Sephora" But I didn't want to alarm anyone too much. Just a little. Because I really am OK. Just sometimes I feel like being dramatic.
Thing is, I definitely don't look like this right now. These pics were taken on Monday, and since then I have fallen ill to an incredibly vicious flu. Stupid airplane. Turns out, that Airborne immunity booster stuff doesn't work sometimes.
So you wanna hear my fainting story? It's never happened to me before and kinda didn't turn out how I'd imagined it. You know, like how they portray it in all the old movies when the woman gives out a faint little cry, puts her hand to her head and falls gracefully to the floor, but not before her Knight in Shining Armor comes in just the nick of time to prevent her delicate head from hitting the ground. LIES! I tell you, LIES!! Turns out, you get all hot and sweaty first, and then you're hit with this vicious bout of nausea, and then you ask someone where the bathroom is, but you're not conscious long enough to hear their answer, and then your Knight in Shining Armor does come around the corner, but only just in time to see you fall. Then it turns out that you didn't do it quite so gracefully as you'd hoped, and get a slammin headache as a result, which is highly disappointing since you've been practicing for this moment since you were 8. {I was very into graceful fainting during my childhood} And then, like the cherry on top, there's a highly embarrassing charade involving kind of unnecessary wheelchairs, sales associates fanning me with coupons and lots and lots of staring.
Awful I tell you.
So now I'm in quarantine. With body aches, a mountain of blankets and a throw-up bowl. On Christmas break. While the family is in the other room having a dinner party with friends and eating cinnamon rolls.
Allow me one more dramatic moment?
WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY?!?! WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY?!?!

OK thanks. I'm done.

Aw! I had this same experience once. I was a freshman in my college choir. It was my first semester. A few days later, some kid came up to me and said, "hey, aren't you the one that fainted?"
always awesome. But its the only time it ever happened!
now I just sit down when I get that scary hot feeling.
By the way, your sweater is very cute

ohhh nooo!! so sorry you're sick! i faint a lot. usually about once a year. actually my fainting spell is due pretty soon. las year it was sitting outside a cafe eating breakfast. that was a dramatic one. my friends though i was seizing.
but yes you're so right. so not glamourous like the movies. the worst is the headache afterwards.
feel better soon!!

I feel you on the whole fainting thing. I used to get terrible light headedness around that special time of the month. About two and a half years ago while I was in my training week at the Gap, I started feeling faint but forced myself to finish cashing out a customer thinking I would be okay ... how wrong I was. I went to reach for a bag and passed right out. Hit my head on the counter and everything. Don't you love when all eyes are you? Literally? How embarrassing.

I hope you are feeling better. That really is the worst. Here is the good news though - next time you will know what it feels like when you're about to faint! May you sit down faster than I did. Bad news - The post faint nausea and sweats still happen to me even when I DO sit down in time. How unfair is that?

Poor thing, that's the worst!

I passed out at Ozzfest, yeah that huge concert full of metal heads. As if I didn't stand out enough (my hubby dragged me there) the passing out and being dragged to a paramedic through the dirt was sure to catch attention. =P

Hope you're better soon!

oh no! feel better! the only time I ever fainted was when I was 12 or 13. I fell off my bike, right so that the handle bars hit me in the chest. Very graceful, I know, I ended up stumbling into my house and fainted into the arms of my dad. I woke up less then 30 seconds later to my mom screaming into the phone that I needed an ambulance. You're totally right! Fainting wasn't the way I always practiced it when I was little either.

Oh noooo! I'm so sorry to hear that :(

The one time I almost fainted was the last time I donated blood. I had just finised telling the nurse that I had proudly never fainted giving blood, and the sight of blood doesn't bother me (it still doesn't) but just as they tilt me upright in the chair and tell me to go home I tell them I can't rightly do so, in a high squeaky voice. They had to tip me all the way back with my feet higher than my head so the blood would rush back to my head, and feed me ice chips and cover my neck and forehead with wet paper towels. Ugh. Embarassing, but thankfully only the nurses and other donators saw, and I got juice and a cookie after.

Oh yeah, and being hot and sweaty and the horrible nausea are all there. Its really unpleasant.

This is SO STRANGE. I caught a flu after flying home a week ago and I also passed out a couple of days ago (though in a MUCH less dramatic fashion). And my family is in the other room while I am sick, sick, sick and sad, sad, sad....AND cinammon rolls were eaten without me, too! I think I can safely say, "I know how you feel". :)

When I was pregnant last year, I fainted all the time. And considering I had never fainted before, it was a pretty big deal. The worst was when I dropped to the floor (and slid down the blackboard) in front of my class of college freshmen. SO GLAD I had on a long skirt that day!

I hope you feel a million times better soon. And the outfit is totally rockin' today, sick or no. It's got a fabulous 70s vibe, between the denim shirt and the flower and your awesome new watch. Yay!

Oh, honey! That's just awful. Tell me they gave you free samples.

Did we all practice graceful fainting when we were little? I feel like that's a thing.

Reggie said...

Oh My Gosh!!!! That SUCKS! It's horrible! I totally get the horrible feeling of humiliation and disappointment you feel when you finally come to. I passed out in a bar once (it was from heat mostly, not drinking) and all I could think was 'This can't have happened to *me*, not me, not here, not now, not like this!!' To make matters worse, my husband decided to regale the entire bar with the story of my fainting explaining how my tolerance was so low it only took two sips of pear cider to knock me out. *Thanx honey, I love you too* ::glare:: At least he picked me up from the floor and carried me back to the booth.
I hope you feel better soon, Sydney, so you too can enjoy the cinnamon rolls.

I was so into graceful passing out when I was little too. Did you ever see "Two of a Kind" with the Olsen twins? I used that passing out scene as my example and I practiced for hours.

Then, the one time I really passed out I landed on some guy's shoe at the amusement park. And they wouldn't let me ride the roller coaster. Passing out is So not what it's cracked up to be in the movies.

Your experience reminds me of mine. This past semester at school I fainted at church. During Sunday school I felt the same way you did and left to go find the bathroom. Once I was in the hall I was beginning to black out and fell to the ground. Thankfully I was caught before I hit the ground. Sadly I didn't fall into the arms of a knight in shinning armor that was single :( There went all of my day dreams of fainting into the arms of a very attractive man that I would fall madly in love with. Oh well maybe next time or not because fainting was kind of scary. Anyways from that day on EVERY Sunday my Bishop would always joke about me fainting. He is a very caring man, but that joke got old fast.

Hope you feel better and I hope they save a cinnamon roll for you.

Colleen said...

In 5th grade, I did the ask to use the bathroom thing, but the teacher caught me while trying to give me an answer.
Then I went to the nurse.

I don't even remember being embarrassed. As an adult it would be much worse. sorry. hope you feel better.

My first baby was in the NICU and the morning after my first night home I was rushing to get to the hospital to see him and BAM. I went down hard. Hit my head on a door frame on the way down. I totally thought people crumpled when they fainted, but no. You pretty much just go stiff as a board and fall over.

And since I'd just had a c-section my mom called 911 because she was all worried about hemorrhage and stuff. I woke up (half dressed, all post partum pudgy) to a bunch of firemen shining a light in my eyes. It was so embarrassing.

Tara said...

I'm actually really surprised to read all the stories of girls fainting! It seems like a really common thing...

Anyways I won't tell my story in detail but it happened to me (the first time) in high school biology class. I was having incredibly bad cramps and suddenly there I was on the floor looking up at my classmates and teacher with a massive headache.

Since you're getting a lot of sympathy on here, I thought I'd offer the contrary: shake it off - you'll get better before you know it. :)

don't feel to bad. about a week ago my sister-in-law took her son to the hospital to get some blood work done, then she looked at the blood in the tube and passed out and PEED HER PANTS! so they had to give her some scrubs to wear home. So in comparison, you were much more graceful.

Been following you for a while now, it would be a fainting story that would out me. Anyhow, I feel you, I had a summer of fainting spells (was later diagnosed with neurocardiogenic syncope) the worst was the first time. We were waiting for a table at Bennigan's, I don't feel... I was down before I could utter "so well". I woke to paramedics fussing all over me. I refused a trip to the hospital and begged for food. I was so hungry. We had a table in an instant, and a feast followed. Best service ever.

Seriously, though, fainting takes a lot of you. Rest up, hope you're feeling much better in time for the holiday.

Awwe that's horrible! I always thought fainting was like that too - was I ever wrong! I've had too many experiences to count! The worst was blacking out in the eye doctors chair after he dilated my eyes - sure freaked him out! Then I fainted after watching a video in sex ed in highschool - so embarrassing! whoops!

Merry Christmas! :) feel better!

Awwww, that sounds a lot like my first Christmas after getting married. I ended up with the worst flu I've ever had, threw up at my darling brand-new husband's feet in the parking lot of the university hospital, made it into the ER and then dashed off to throw up again in a bathroom (didn't even manage to close the bathroom door--way fun for everyone else in the ER), and the Christmas photo shows me, by the tree, eating jello, with a barf bucket at my feet. And then, as a late Christmas present, we got the bill for the ER visit. I'm sure the poor guy wondered what he signed on for, but, hey. We're still happily married, 15 years later.

:( Oh no!!! I'm sorry to hear that, Syndey. I hope you feel better soon. Use bedrest as an excuse to watch every one of your favorite Christmas movies. :)

Wow, glad you are better. Cute outfit to faint in, and that's the important thing ;) (cause of all the staring)

Always remember to tuck your knees (like when you are sking and about to fall), when you know that is going to happen (shorter distance to fall... ;)

Oh my heck love! I cannot believe that actually happened to you!! I have never fainted in my entire life, but always wanted to when I was younger. You know, for the attention. I wish I was there to hang out with you and tell you funny stories in attempt to make you feel better! If it makes you feel any better I am ridiculously sick too. Awful cold. Ya know what I'm finding out? NOT ALLOWED TO BE SICK AND A MAMA. Doesn't work. Hoping you and I both feel better by Christmas!! The good news is: you look awesome in these pics, your necklace is bomb, and you're the best layerer (word?) in the world.

oh, it is such a bummer to be sick for christmas! and fainting is zero fun -- definitely not as romantic as the movies. just painful.

drink some orange juice and take your meds, and maybe you can knock this thing out before christmas day!!

AWW poor thing!! I hope you get better soon, I am now sending a healing cloud your way. Xoxo

Oh no, fainting is not good. In Sephora of all places. I fainted one time in Church and after that my Dad said I never had to go to church ever again. At least the fainting was linked to the flu. Sometimes when I'm Christmas shopping it gets so claustrophobic and hot in the store I amost pass out!

i'm sick too sydney! we can wallow together! ahah.
my theory is that we get sick on vacation because our bodies finally stop for a second and relax and then it remembers, "oh yeah, i probably shouldn't have biked five miles in the snow, i'm gonna be sick now. bye."
feel better soon!
